Bob started playing ice hockey in the 7th grade as a member of the Morristown team in the Colonial Hockey League. In 1975, Bob was part of the inaugural season for the Morristown High School Colonials ice hockey program. In that year, he was named “All County” by the Daily Record. Bob was the Colonials’ Captain in his junior and senior years and was named “All County” by the Daily Record and “All-State” by the Star Ledger. In his senior year of high school, Bob was awarded the Edward G. Halvorsen Trophy as the Most Valuable Player of the Morris County Secondary Schools Ice Hockey League. While in high school, Bob also played for Ben Leuzzi’s New Jersey
Golden Blades and for the semi-pro Florham Park Cobras. Following his attendance at Providence College and Catholic University Law
School, Bob became an assistant coach at County College of Morris. Bob also coached in the Morris Plains youth hockey program.
Bob and his wife, Susan, in moved to Basking Ridge in 1987, where he was instrumental in starting the Ridge High School Ice Hockey program. After high school, Bob played for the Mennen Raiders, Newark Sabres, Baltimore Blazers and enjoyed great hockey and camaraderie in the Mennen Summer League and the South Mountain Arena men’s leagues. Bob joined the Essex Hunt Club in 1995 where he coached his children, Megan and Michael, and also played for the men’s program which won the USA Hockey “over 40” National Championship in 2006.
Bob will tell you that the best part of his playing hockey was the friendships thathe developed playing hockey over the years with such legends as John Warchol, Reynold Fauci, Harvey Cohen, Tim Mullin, Pete Herms, Rich McLaughlin, and Ben Leuzzi.
Bob is hopeful that the newest addition to the Winters’ family, his granddaughter
Cameron Rose, will enjoy playing hockey in New Jersey as much as he and his
children did!
