Mark Labe

Official

Born and raised in Montreal, Canada, ice hockey has always been a huge part of Mark’s life. Upon graduating from high school Mark played college hockey at Fairleigh Dickinson University and then at Upsala College. At Upsala, Mark played for Coach Dave Sloan. The team was undefeated in league play for 2 years and won the league championship his senior season.

In 1981 during law school in San Diego, California, Mark began his referee career. Mark’s very first game and his first 50 or so games, were with his treasured friend, Mark Garber, whom he met playing hockey at FDU. This was the beginning of Mark’s 45 year (and counting) career as an ice hockey official. Mark joined the San Diego chapter of NIHOA where he officiated at the Division 1 College level.

Upon his return to NJ in 1985, he became a proud member of the Metro NY/NJ NIHOA chapter. Since 1985, Mark has never missed a high school season, many years refereeing the most games in the chapter. It is estimated he has refereed well over 1,600 high school games. He has officiated numerous State Finals over the span of four decades, the first in 1994, the most recent in 2026 and many other “big” games, too many to mention. Mark has officiated NJ high school hockey throughout the state, from Lawrenceville to Brick, from Bayonne to Mercer County.

Mark is married to Karen, his wife of 37 years and they have two grown children Brett and Shelby both of whom, he is proud to say, are MD’s.
