John Kovacs began his coaching career while at the University of Maine at Orono. He was named Assistant coach at Orono High School for 2 seasons 1985-86 and 1986-87.
He returned to NJ in 1987 to “assist” his alma mater, Morris Knolls High School, where he was a 4-year varsity player, being named All-league for 2 seasons. At 22 years old, he was named Head Coach of Morris Knolls High School.
During 9 seasons as Head Coach:

· 2 Division titles
· 1 Mennen Division title
· Named Star Ledger Coach of the year in 1990
In 1996 John made the move to become Mendham High School’s Head Coach for their inaugural season. In his 28 seasons at Mendham High School, he has achieved:
· 301 wins
· 7 League titles
· Named Coach of the Year 2x
· 24 state tournament appearances
During his 37 years as a Head Coach:
· Coached with my friend Robert Dachisen for 32 years
· Unwavering support of family and friends
· Developed life long friendships
· Accumulated 415 wins
· 8 League championships
· 7 Division 1 Ice Hockey players
· Coached 3 NJHHOF inductees with more sure to be inducted
· 20+ Division 2 and 3 players
· Served on the NJSIAA Ice Hockey committee for 15+ years
