Gary’s ice hockey career started in 1971 when as an undergraduate at Wagner College he helped establish their first team and became part of the offensive line-up. From there, he became the head ice hockey coach for Verona High School’s 1989 inaugural season winning a divisional championship. While at Verona, he coached the Garden State games for 4 years garnering gold, silver and bronze medals. From 1991-1996, he served on the South Mountain Arena Advisory Committee promoting the interests of all Essex County high school hockey teams. In 1996, he developed and guided the Verona/Glen Ridge cooperative ice hockey program which still operates and is
the longest cooperative ice hockey program in the state. In 1997, Gary returned to Wagner College to coach and win 3 consecutive Metropolitan League Championships with a cumulative record of 52-1-1. In 2003, he became Verona High School’s Athletic Director, received the state’s 2013 Sectional Award of Merit and was inducted in the NJ Athletic Director Hall of Fame in 2017. He also served as a monitor of athletic programs in the state for the NJSIAA. Since retirement in 2015, he serves as the treasurer and on the executive committee for the NJ Interscholastic Ice Hockey League.
