Brian Day’s coaching career began in 1988, when he assisted his Hamilton College teammate, Gary Kramer, with the U-12 NJ Devils. Further inspired by another teammate, Tim Whitehead, who was thriving in the collegiate coaching ranks, Day began a teaching/coaching career at Delbarton School the following year. Joining Alec Walsh and Paul Sylvester on Jim Brady’s staff, Day learned an incredible amount working with this staff for three years, whose teams won two Mennen Cups and a State Championship in 1992.
The following season, Day began a nine-year tenure as Delbarton’s head coach, primarily working alongside Tommy Humphreys and Bruce Shatel. During this period, Delbarton won eight Mennen Cups, and Day was named Coach of the Year by The Star-Ledger once and by The Daily Record twice. In 1998, he connected with Bill Beaney of Middlebury College, who became a lasting mentor. From 1999 to 2001, Day also served as the NJ Colonials’ coaching director.
In the fall of 2001, Day took over the head coaching reins at Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, MA. Over the next twenty-three seasons, his teams won seven Independent School League titles and additional Flood-Marr and Cushing Tournament championships. Beginning with Delbarton’s George Parros, Day coached many future NHL players at Nobles, including NY Rangers alumnus Kevin Hayes and NJ Devils alumni Mark Fayne, Jimmy Hayes, and Miles Wood. Over the course of his thirty-three-year head coaching career, which concluded in 2024, Day’s teams amassed an overall record of 563-232-62.
